Sega announces unreleased games, arcade ports for Genesis Mini 2

Over the past few years, long-time gaming companies like Nintendo and Sega have gotten into the nostalgia business. These companies have leaned into the demand for retro titles by releasing integrated versions of their previous consoles complete with built-in titles. As these new retro devices start to make an impression on the gaming world, Nintendo and Sega have had to do more to make the newest devices look more attractive. Sega has brought some new tricks to the table this week, as they have announced the lineup for the Sega Genesis Mini 2, and there are some surprising titles coming with it.

Unreleased Games

Following up on its 2017 console releases, Sega has decided to include 2 unreleased games on the new Genesis Mini 2. These games are truly unreleased, having never appeared anywhere before. It's not clear why the titles have been held back for decades, but we're glad that the work behind them will finally see the light of day.

Devi & Pii

This title comes to us from Sonic 3 developer Takashi Iizuka. The title is a "paddle-style" game in which you try to juggle angels and bounce devils. That definitely sounds like a strange game, and certainly a lot less complex than Sonic 3, but we'll have the ability to try it out soon.

Star Mobile

Another unreleased game we'll get to try out is Star Mobile, a game from Mindware. The game was completed in 1992 but never saw the light of day. It's a game with a heavy focus on puzzles, so it has a lot of potential. In fact, it sounds a bit like Topple, in that you're stacking stars on a balanced mobile.

Arcade Ports

Some of the titles coming to the console will be games that were previously arcade only releases. This will mark the first time these games have been released onto console style hardware instead of arcade machines, meaning it's the first time you'll be able to play them at home without purchasing an arcade machine.

Fantasy Zone

This game is a side scroller with a cutesy design. The game is being ported by the same team that did Darius on the first console and will feature a mode not available in the arcade. While the goal of arcade machines like these was to pull coins from your pocket, the console version is not. As such, a new easy mode will be introduced to make it a more normal gaming experience.

Space Harrier, Space Harrier II

These titles are a little confusing as the original was arcade only, but the sequel was available on the original Genesis. However, both are being redone to improve framerate and sprint rendering. This does introduce the question as to whether the new port is more modern than the original hardware or simply a better port.

Spatter

If you've never heard of this one that's okay. The game was never popular and not well-known. In fact, it would be more surprising if you were aware of the game. The fact that you play as a clown on a tricycle moving through a maze, it shouldn't be too surprising that many people skipped it. Apparently 1984 hadn't introduced scary clowns to the public?

Super Locomotive

This one sounds even worse than the last. The whole game is based around switching tracks in order to avoid train crashes. 1982 was a much simpler time.

VS Puyo Puyo Sun

It's nice to see that a 2 player arcade title has made the list, though not the company's biggest game franchise. However, this is the third entry in the franchise in which you match colors. This new version will include game play that was not available in the original.
