Droid Does, Droid Eris Might
posted Sunday Nov 15, 2009 by Jon Wurm
Can a $100 Android phone from Verizon really be all that? Here's the skinny on the phone that might:
The good:
1. $100 price tag.
2. The least expensive Android phone.
3. Pebble like feel in the palm.
4. HTC's custom UI can dress up the OS.
5. The Sense UI does a good job in certain applications like the internet browser in regards to zoom in, out etc.
6. 5MP camera.
The could be better:
1. The least expensive Android phone.
2. 3.2in. touch screen with 320x480 resolution.
3. Android 1.5 instead of 2.0 means no Google Maps Turn by Turn.
Hit the break to see The ugly.
The ugly:
1. Qualcomm 528-MHz MSM7600 processor.
2. Clumsy transition between the virtual keyboard and physical keys.
Now keep in mind that this is a review of the Droid Eris not the big brother Motorola Droid. That being said I tried not to compare the two new Droid phones or the iPhone against Eris, even though it was tempting. Overall is seems that Eris is not a bad phone for the price but it obviously has its problems. The most notable of which is the laggy interface mostly due to a combination of Android 1.5, which HTC plans to change to 2.0 and the slower Qualcomm 528-MHz MSM7600 processor. I wouldn't recommend Eris to the power business user but it is still a good buy for the casual user who needs more than the similarly priced non-smart phones and the iPhone 3G can offer.
