New Drug Scare Tactics

It's back to school, and you know what that means - time for scare tactics from the local news affiliates to get you to watch the 11 o'clock news instead of going to sleep so you can wake up in the morning and get your kids ready for school! Today's story comes to us from the local ABC affiliate in Phoenix, Arizona.

The report claims that drug use triples in middle school. How many of you remember a drug problem in elementary school? I don't even remember a single situation where an administrator even considered the possibility of someone having drugs, so triple that isn't really a scary stat for me.

They go on to say that the kids are hiding the drugs in "water bottles and energy drinks that twist open to reveal a hidden compartment for storage." Now, are they suggesting that the kids are making these things? I have trouble putting together an Ikea desk, so I have trouble believing that 11-year-olds are manufacturing sophisticated threaded drink containers.

Those accusations sound bad, but it gets worse, including taking vodka in some interesting and gross new places. Because of the ages of some of our readers, I will not discuss it here, but eek.

The whole point of their story, however, is where this all comes a little too close to home for probably all of us. It is caffeine. Caffeine is the reason these kids are into drugs and hiding them in engineering marvels. I have been drinking caffeine for a very long time, and I have never been compelled to bring cocaine to school, nor have I thought about which orifice might get me drunk faster.

I am offended by the fact that so-called "news agencies" feel the need to use provably false, ridiculous claims about people, including myself, to boost their ratings. What about you guys?
