Urban traffic in places like Columbia can be so bad that it can take hours to go just a few blocks. One of the best ways to avoid this traffic is to switch to a bike, but this switch is not as common as you might expect. Biko, a Columbian startup, has found a way to encourage people to make the switch and make it safer at the same time.
Through a rewards system, participants receive coupons to places like Taco Bell just for riding their bikes. While using the application, data is collected about routes and times of day, allowing local governments to see when and where support for increased bike usage is needed. For example, adding bike lanes or additional police can happen because of the data gained.
Biko is available now for iOS and Android.
