Wi-Fi Aware Looks to Challenge Beacons in 2015 [Live]

Saturday Jan 10, 2015 (00:12:16)

Description

While Wi-Fi technology is only about 15 years old, this year will mark the 10 BILLIONTH Wi-Fi certified device shipping to market. In our collection in the office we have PCMCIA cards dating back that far which added the wireless capability to laptops that did not yet have it built-in. Who could have predicted that the technology would come so far so quickly?

This year, the standard welcomes a new member: Wi-Fi Aware, which gathers local information and displays it. This is similar to Bluetooth Beacons, which allow you to receive information based on proximity to transmitters. Wi-Fi Aware will have a more global appeal, however, as seemingly all devices support Wi-Fi.
