F5 Live: Refreshing Technology
Episode 152 - E3 Predictions and Previews
Sunday Jun 13, 2010 (01:13:00)
This week, we discuss what we expect to hear announced at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010!
Scott is a developer who has worked on projects of varying sizes, including all of the PLuGHiTz Corporation properties. He is also known in the gaming world for his time supporting the DDR community, through DDRLover and hosting tournaments throughout the Tampa Bar Area. Currently, when he is not working on software projects or hosting F5 Live: Refreshing Technology, Scott can often be found returning to his high school days working with the Foundation for Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST), mentoring teams and judging engineering notebooks at competitions. He has also helped found a student software learning group, the ASCII Warriors.
With over ten years of audio engineering experience, Nick's addition to PLuGHiTz Corporation is best served when he is behind the mixing board every Sunday night to produce the audio side of F5 Live: Refreshing Technology, Piltch Point and PLuGHiTz Live Night Cap. While mixing live every week, his previous radio show hosting experience gives him the ability to co-host as well, giving each show a unique flare with his slightly off-center, yet still realistic take on all things tech. An integral part of the show, you can find Nick always enveloped in coming up with new (and sometimes crazy) ideas and content for the show and you can always expect the most direct opinion on the stories that he feels need to be shared with the world. During the few hours where Nick isn't sleeping or working on ways to improve the company, he spends his free time going to hockey and football games and playing the latest titles on Xbox 360. Email him for his gamertag and add him today for a fun escape from the normal monotony and annoyance that the Xbox LIVE gaming community can sometimes be!
Jon is a F5 Live co-host and UpStream contributor as well as the Chief Cash Officer of PLuGHiTz Corporation. We don't know how he wears so many hats so well or how he still finds time to feed his need for all things tech but some questions are best left unanswered. If you're up for a challenge go find him on Xbox Live @shinobiJon and if you figure him out...let us know.
Josh has come from the Brazilian wilds to bring yet another perspective on the gaming industry as well as today's up-and-coming technology. You may have seen him at GameStop over the past two years, or if you're a lover of Largo High School Productions, you have seen him up on stage doing his thing the last 4 years. On occasion, you can catch him on Xbox Live mowing down zombies in Left 4 Dead or making it rain on Madden 2010.
June 11th marked the beginning of an event bigger than the Olympics, I mean the good Olympics, not the winter ones. The World Cup 2010 South Africa kicked off with 2 match ups between Mexico vs. South Africa, and France vs. Uruguay. Even though the games were heavily televised around the world the Internet wasn't taking the day off by any means. Starting at 6 a.m. ET traffic started increasing heavily for news sites and peaked at 12 a.m. ET with 12,078,868 visitors per minute according to measurements taken by Akamai. This breaks the previous record set on November 4th, 2008 when Barack Obama won the presidential election which registered 8,572,042 visitors per minute at its peak. At 5 p.m. ET traffic was still 130% above normal at 6.5 million visitors per minute. Looks like it's going to be a long and heavy flow this month for the Internet.
We here at the show absolutely love the Left 4 Dead series. Scott seems to enjoy the first game for different reasons than I enjoy the sequel, but we can both agree on the fact that both games do certain things extremely well while lacking in other areas. Still, there are lots of people who will play the original game for the fact that they love the simplicity of the gameplay.
Remember when a retailer was just somewhere you went to buy a product and the way you chose was based on price, availability and proximity? Well, those days are behind us. Now, game retailers spend all of the time coming up with ways to ensure you buy from them with exclusive content. Here are the ways your favorite retailers are going to make you buy from them!
Lately we have been bringing you a lot of news about The Avengers but even for the past several years, the comic book film adaptations we've seen have been mostly dominated by Marvel, with the exception of Batman, Superman, and The Watchmen. DC fans, don't feel left in the dark just yet however. Warner Bros has faith in the upcoming Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds which is set to release June 17th, 2011.
After months of rewriting and rethinking the way the site works and feels, we are pleased to announce a complete relaunch of PLuGHiTz Live! We have put a lot of work into this project and we hope it makes using the site easier and more enjoyable.
Apple claims to be changing the game again with their new iPhone 4 which recently made its debut at the 2010 World Wide Developers Conference that took place June 7th-11th. Jobs had a lot to say during his lengthy keynote where he first started off talking about the iPad before getting to the star of the show, the iPhone 4. Below are some notes that will help summarize the latest and greatest iPhone according to Steve Jobs.
Saturday night we had the privilege to get a sneak peek of trailers that are going to be presented this year at E3. Ranging from the PS3 exclusive Killzone 3 to Bethesda's newest addition to the Fallout Universe, Fallout: New Vegas. We also got a small sneak peek of the game I've been following religiously... that's right Star Wars: The Old Republic. Unfortunately we got to hear a little bit about how Blur (the company who made last years trailer) goes about creating epic Star Wars scenes and a reveal that this years trailer will involve Princess Leia's home planet Alderaan. Another Star Wars related reveal was a new Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 trailer. I won't give away anything but I will say that it was awesome.
Quickhit Football is a small, easy to play, Flash based Internet game that has scored big-time with its official license from the National Football League, allowing the game to incorporate 32 professional teams. EA has a deal with the NFL that allows it exclusive access for consoles only and it does not cover completely Internet based games. That doesn't mean that Quickhit Football acquired the license for free. They raised $13 million in venture capital to pay for it, which is quite a price for a free game to pay. Brandon Justice, the head developer, has stressed that Quickhit Football will not directly compete with games like Madden because it reaches a different football fan demographic.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen may have been an OK movie but it certainly wasn't up to Michael Bay's standards. He says that the writing was most of the problem, which is pretty obvious. He attributes this to the Writers Guild strike that affected film and TV, saying,
